List of new registrations of passenger cars in Germany by brand and model series

The list contains the number of annual new registrations of passenger cars in Germany from 2004 to 2016 according to brand and model series . The statistics are published by the Federal Motor Transport Authority .

methodology

New registration

According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), a new registration is the first registration and registration of a brand new vehicle with a license plate in Germany. Vehicles that have already been registered in Germany or abroad are not included. Vehicles of the Federal Police and the Technical Relief Organization (THW) are included in the statistical analysis . In contrast, the vehicles of the Bundeswehr as well as vehicles with red or short-term license plates and with export license plates are not included .

Passenger cars, brands, model lines

The KBA shows the new registrations of passenger cars (passenger cars) since 2004 broken down according to brand and model series. The allocation of cars to model series is based on the vehicle identification number (VIN). If a common floor pan with the same FIN fragment is used for different model series, the separation of the model series is problematic. That is why VW Golf / Bora / Jetta, Seat Altea / Toledo / Leon and Porsche Boxster / Cayman were shown together.

As a result of the EU-wide harmonization of vehicle documents , vehicles with a special purpose (mobile homes, ambulances and others) have been assigned to cars since 2005.

Designated model series

In contrast to the evaluation of new registrations according to segments and model series, the designation of model series does not follow any published rules. In the case of new registrations in the very low three-digit range or below, expulsion is possible, but not guaranteed. Model series can be shown although they have lower new registrations than other model series that are not shown. If no new registration number is given for a model series for a particular year, this does not necessarily mean that the model series had no new registrations in the respective year; the number of new registrations of this model series is included within their brand under Other .

Notes on the list

The KBA shows the number of new registrations on a monthly, annual and cumulative basis during the year. The following list only shows the annual new registrations.

The following list shows the number of new registrations for each year according to the statistical recording method, composition of the model series and their allocation to brands, which was valid in the respective year. Therefore, comparisons of the number of new registrations from different years are sometimes only possible to a limited extent.
