The federal highway 255 (abbreviation: B 255 ) leads from the Hessian Marburg in the district of Marburg-Biedenkopf via Herborn in the Lahn-Dill district to Montabaur in the Westerwald district in Rhineland-Palatinate and has a length of about 97 km.

history

In the years 1817 to 1825 the first “ Art Road ” from Biedenkopf to the Zollbuche was built in the Grand Duchy of Hessen-Darmstadt . Part of this road is today's section of the B 255 from Gladenbach to the Zollbuche .

At the level of the customs beech, the B 255 crosses the ridge between the upper Salzbödetal and the upper Aartal . The state road L 3047 coming from the south from the Gießen area also joins here. It follows a route from Gießen to the Angelburg on watersheds, the historic Westfalenweg , an old road that continues today through a forest path from the intersection.

In the Middle Ages, the southern strand of the formerly important long-distance trade route Leipzig-Cologne, the northern route of which is known as Brabanter Strasse , ran on the section in the Aartal between Niederweidbach and Herborn .

Previous routes and names

Since the completion of the Niederweimar bypass, the B 255 begins at the Niederweimar exit of the expanded B 3. The section from the Marburg-Süd junction via Marburg-Gisselberg to Niederweimar belonged to the B 3 , where the B 255 bis , before it was expanded to the motorway-like B 3a then began in Niederweimar.

State of development

Due to the heavy traffic in the Herborn area and an unfavorable traffic route at the entrance to the Burg district, a bypass was opened for the Seelbach and Burg districts in April 2009. The B 255 and B 277 share the route between Herborn-Burg and Herborn . On the downhill stretch to Herborn coming from the west, various chicanes with an emergency lane to divert truck traffic were created as a result of the Herborn fire .

The intersection with the B 8 at Hahner Stock and the junction to Hahn am See were redesigned without a partial plan until 2013 ; the B 255 and the B 8 now share the carriageway over a length of around 800 m. Likewise, the mostly four-lane section between Boden and the northern part of the Montabaur junction on the A 3 is at least partially map-free or similar to a motorway. The bypass around the places Ettinghausen , Oberahr and Niederahr , and thus the gap between Hahn am See and Boden, was completed and opened at the end of 2016.

Second World War

On March 24, 1945, the Americans broke out of their bridgehead on the right bank of the Rhine near Remagen and advanced east and northeast. The 3rd Panzer Division and the advancing 104th Infantry Division of the 1st US Army followed today's road route across the Westerwald and crossed the Dill at Herborn, Burg and Asslar on March 27th. On March 28, 1945 around noon the head of the 3rd Panzer Division reached the urban area of Marburg.

tourism

Tourist routes

Solmser Straße runs between Bischoffen- Niederweidbach and Herborn .

Interesting sections of the route

On a section between Gladenbach and Bischoffen around the Zollbuche junction , the B 255 has numerous curves, which makes the Zollbuche a popular meeting point for motorcyclists. Until 1628 it marked the border between Hessen-Darmstadt and the county of Solms . The border between the Marburg-Biedenkopf district and the Lahn-Dill district has been running there since 1974 .

The Aartalsee is only a few kilometers away from the Zollbuche .
