The federal road 294 (abbreviation: B 294 ) is a 173 km long federal road that runs in Baden-Württemberg within the administrative districts of Karlsruhe and Freiburg and leads from Bretten to Freiburg im Breisgau .

course

The federal road 294 leads from Bretten im Kraichgau via Pforzheim and the Enz Valley through the Northern Black Forest to Freudenstadt and further over the middle Kinzig Valley and the Elz Valley to Freiburg im Breisgau . The road passes altitudes between 200 and 800 m. ü. M.

Between Freudenstadt and Schiltach, the road runs about 25 kilometers together with the B 462 , and between Haslach im Kinzigtal and Hausach about six kilometers together with the B 33 . The B 294 between Waldkirch and Freiburg is built like a motorway and is signposted as a motor vehicle. It runs north of Freiburg briefly congruent with the B 3 and ends as a feeder to the A 5 a few kilometers later at the Freiburg-Nord junction.

Various attractions are located on the route as the glassworks in Wolfach together with old town with castle, the half-timbered old town of Schiltach , the Costume Museum of the medieval town of Haslach , the Elztalmuseum in Waldkirch , with short walks to the outdoor museum Vogt Farm in Gutach and the Triberg Waterfalls .

development

The road from Bretten to Pforzheim was expanded into a Chaussee between 1768 and 1769 . In 1771 the road from Pforzheim to Neuenbürg was expanded to become a Chaussee.

The directory of rural roads in Baden from July 1, 1901 divides today's B 294 into two different sections:

  • The Baden State road no. 16 between Bretten and Pforzheim was downgraded to county road.
  • The Baden state road No. 138 from Pforzheim to Wildbad ended after 1.7 km at the Baden-Württemberg border.

The national highway 294 was introduced to the 1937th

In 1985 the east bypass of Freudenstadt and the bypass of Waldkirch running through the Hugenwald tunnel were approved.

In the 1990s, the three villages of Hausach, Schiltach and Wolfach in the Kinzig valley were relieved by the construction of bypasses, each of which leads through one or two tunnels. In 1991 the 830 m long Schlossberg tunnel and the 1,840 m long Kirchberg tunnel were opened to bypass the city of Schiltach and in 1993 the 1,256 m long Reutherberg tunnel to bypass the city of Wolfach. While the two tunnels around Schiltach lengthen the route by a good one kilometer compared to passing through the town, the tunnel near Wolfach shortens it by around 700 m. In 1995, the 1,085 m long summer mountain tunnel was finally opened to bypass the town of Hausach.

The through-road of Elzach was replaced by a new 1.5 km long bypass between 2009 and 2012. The inauguration took place on October 9, 2012. The route cost around 13.6 million euros .

Planning

Since the 1980s there have been plans in Pforzheim to build a west bypass that will link the B 294 with the B 10 at the Pforzheim West junction and pass through the planned Arlinger tunnel west of the city center. On November 20, 2015, construction section 1.02 of this western bypass began as the B 463 that had been laid, but which will not yet create a connection to the B 294. The already completed section 1.01 of the west bypass connects the A 8 with the B 10.

The construction of a bypass for winds in the Elztal began in November 2015. A construction time of two years was calculated for the bypass road of the Niederwind district and six years for the Oberwind district, where a tunnel several hundred meters long has to be built. According to the current status, the costs are estimated at 68 million euros.

In the summer of 2017, the Niederwind bypass was scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2019. The first preparatory construction work was planned for September 2018 for the continuation of the upper winds. The main road will be relocated to the south-east (uphill to Hörnleberg ) of the Elztalbahn , which requires two railway bridges. The Elztalbahn will be electrified at the same time, which will require rail replacement traffic on the federal highway in 2019 . In addition, two routes will be crossed over the main road and a bridge will be built over the Elz .

The construction work was delayed, so that the new junction west near Niederwinden was only completed in summer 2019. The preparatory site work for the next construction phase was also completed by this time. The next phase of construction work is to begin on September 28, 2019 with the tunneling. [outdated]
