List of museums in Lower Saxony

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Lower Saxony there are around 625 different museums and local parlors that collect and exhibit cultural and historical evidence and art from all eras. Over 50% of these museums were founded after 1965.

Most of the museums in Lower Saxony are owned by local authorities, districts or privately owned by associations. Many of them are run on a voluntary basis, and some are institutionally funded by the state of Lower Saxony. Over 50% of the museums belong to the category of “local museums and local parlors”.

6,397,139 visitors visited 517 of the museums in 2013. 306 folklore and local museums dominate the museum landscape. There are also 38 institutions in the visual arts (6.1%), 37 archaeological collections, 34 natural history, three collective and 25 open-air museums. In 2013, 220 houses (36.8%) with around 3 million visitors were owned by the state or municipalities, significantly fewer than in other large states.
