Junction (38)  Geisingen A81 B31 E41

The German federal highway 311 (abbreviation: B 311 ) leads from Ulm along the Danube via Ehingen (Danube) to the Geisingen junction on the A 81 .

history

origin

Since 1760, the route between Ulm , Villingen and Strasbourg has been regularly traveled by a stagecoach . Shortly afterwards, the south-west German country roads were expanded into roads . The road between Meßkirch and Mengen via the Gögginger Ried was built between 1765 and 1767. The road between Ulm and Riedlingen was expanded into an art road in 1770 on the occasion of Marie Antoinette's bridal trip . The route from Geisingen to Tuttlingen was expanded to a paved road around 1773. The Menninger Heimatbuch reports the increase in traffic between 1856 and 1874 from 22 to 40 draft animals per day. In 2007, around 11,000 vehicles were counted daily in the same section of the route near Göggingen .

Previous routes and names

The directory of rural roads in Baden dated July 1, 1901 divides today's federal road 311 into three different sections:

  • The Baden state road No. 58 between Geisingen and Tuttlingen.
  • The Baden state road No. 62 between Ulm and Schaffhausen led from Meßkirch on today's federal road 313 to Stockach and from there on today's federal road 34 to Schaffhausen.
  • The Baden state road No. 99 between Meßkirch and Tuttlingen ended after 12.6 km at the Baden-Württemberg border.

The route of today's federal highway 311 crossed the Baden-Württemberg state border several times and therefore had different numbers before the introduction of the Reich road network in 1934:

B 311 tunnel of the
Ertingen bypass
country State road length course
Württemberg No. 47 45.0 km Ulm - Riedlingen
Württemberg No. 76 19.4 km Riedlingen - state border (- Meßkirch)
Hohenzollern k. A. ? (Ulm -) state border - Krauchenwies - state border (- Meßkirch)
to bathe No. 62 ? (Ulm -) state border - Meßkirch (- Stockach)
to bathe No. 99 12.6 km Meßkirch - state border (- Tuttlingen)
Württemberg No. 80 10.4 km (Meßkirch) state border - Tuttlingen
Württemberg No. 81 1.7 km Tuttlingen - Möhringen
to bathe No. 58 15.9 km Möhringen - Geisingen

The Reichsstraße 311 was introduced around 1937 and combined the above-mentioned sections of the route into one continuous trunk road.

In the 1970s, a motorway from Freiburg to Ulm was planned along today's B 311 and B 31 ( A 86 ). However, the project failed in the Black Forest between Freiburg and Donaueschingen due to popular resistance. This also put the plans between Donaueschingen and Ulm on hold. As early as 1934, a "motorway-like road" from Ulm to Freiburg was included in the medium-term plan.

Today, the road is one of the most important east-west connections in Baden-Württemberg and is accordingly heavily used, especially by trucks that are on the road between the greater Munich area and France. Recently, some sections (especially uphill stretches) have been expanded to three lanes in order to create safe overtaking opportunities:

Replacements

The section between AS Geisingen (A 81) and Hüfingen was replaced by the B 31 in 1975.

expansion

After the opening of the Kreuzstrasse tunnel in Tuttlingen on February 17, 2011 and the inauguration of the Neuhausen ob Eck bypass, the B 14 and B 311 left the city of Tuttlingen in the direction of Lake Constance. In the area of Emmingen-Liptingen the B 311 branches off, now bypasses Neuhausen ob Eck and meets the original route before Worndorf.

Further measures:

  • Relief road Rulfingen (opened May 2012)
  • Herbertingen bypass together with B 32, 6.8 km (opened on December 20, 2012)
  • Unlingen bypass , 4.0 km (opened on August 25, 2017)
  • Construction of a new crossing structure with the B 465 in Ehingen (completed)
  • Construction of a new crossing structure near Untermarchtal (completed)
  • New construction of the Danube Viaduct Untermarchtal ( open to traffic in October 2013)

Planning / under construction

  • Crossbar between Erbach and Dellmensingen to the B 30 , 7.6 km (under construction until probably 2023)
  • Riedlingen bypass, 3.0 km (in planning, further requirements with planning rights)
  • Relocation of the B 311 between Sigmaringen and Mengen as the B 311n - Nordtrasse (application for inclusion in the federal transport route plan)
  • Immendingen bypass , 4.0 km (additional requirement)
  • Obermarchtal bypass, 2.0 km (urgent need)
  • Deppenhausen bypass , 1.8 km (additional requirement)
