The federal highway 34 (abbreviation: B 34 ) is a federal highway in Germany . It leads from Basel in Switzerland to Bodman-Ludwigshafen on Lake Constance .

The B 34 begins at the German-Swiss border crossing " Hörnle " in Grenzach-Wyhlen and runs along the High Rhine via Rheinfelden (Baden) , Bad Säckingen and Waldshut, initially to Erzingen . Due to the interruption on Swiss national territory , the route runs starting at the Erzingen / Trasadingen border crossing as Hauptstrasse 13 to Schaffhausen and then as Swiss Autobahn 4 and Hauptstrasse 15 to the border crossing Thayngen / Bietingen . After crossing the state border again , the B 34 continues as the German federal road via Gottmadingen , Singen (Hohentwiel) and Radolfzell on Lake Constance to Bodman-Ludwigshafen. There it joins the federal highway 31 .

Between Rheinfelden (Baden) and the Erzingen / Trasadingen border crossing as well as between the Thayngen / Bietingen border crossing and the Gottmadingen junction of the federal highway 81 , it is a section of the European route E 54 from Paris to Munich .

history

origin

In the early modern times , the trunk road from Basel to Constance was known as the Königsstrasse . Around 1767 it was expanded into a road , and new bridges were built over the Steina , Wutach and Schlucht . From 1780 a stagecoach ran twice a week between Basel and Constance .

Previous routes and names

From 1901 the country road from Basel to Schaffhausen was designated as Baden State Road No. 48 and its continuation from Schaffhausen via Singen (Hohentwiel), Stockach and Meßkirch to Ulm as Badische Staatsstraße No. 62 .

The section from Basel to Singen was designated as Fernverkehrsstraße  34 (FVS 34) from 1932 and renamed Reichsstraße 34 ( R 34 ) in 1934. In Singen (Hohentwiel) this met the route of today's federal highway 33 , which at that time led to Ludwigshafen on Lake Constance .

During the Second World War was the R 34 in the West in the 1940 under the civil administration of the German Reich standing Upper Rhine prolonged and ran there from Belfort coming over Chavannes-sur-l'Étang (German Schaffnat the pond ) and Altkirch , where the former national route 396 crossed until after Saint-Louis (Haut-Rhin) (German Sankt Ludwig ) on the Upper Rhine north of Basel.

Replacements

A section between Bad Säckingen and Albbruck has been replaced by the federal motorway 98, which is classified there as a motor vehicle .

Another section near Radolfzell on Lake Constance was replaced by the federal highway 33 .
