Quizduell is a quiz show based on the app of the same name that has been produced since May 2014 and is moderated by Jörg Pilawa . It alternates with the quiz programs Who knows that? and demand - Hunted weekdays at 18 am in the first broadcast. In addition to the "classic" variant, in which initially four, since 2015 only two studio candidates play against the app users (represented by a "team captain" present in the studio), the variant Quizduell-Olymp has been shown since October 2015 , in which A team of three quiz experts takes the place of the app users.
Gameplay
Original mode
Initially, the classic mode was used. Four candidates competed in the studio against the users of the smartphone app (the so-called “Team Germany”). In contrast, since February 2015, only two studio candidates competed against the app users in the regular broadcast. The winning team wins a cash prize. Due to technical problems, Team Germany was replaced by the studio audience in the first seven episodes. In December 2014, ARD announced that the app had been reprogrammed for the upcoming broadcast in order to eliminate the technical problems.
Variation "Quiz duel Olymp"
At the end of the third season, the game principle Quizduell-Olymp was tested and regularly broadcast on Fridays at 6:50 p.m. from May to September 2016. The fourth season was also occupied by the quiz duel Olympus for a week . Unlike the classic quiz duel , this variant is not broadcast live, but recorded beforehand. A celebrity team competes in the studio against three experts - Olympus - who replace “Team Germany”.
The rules of this game variant have also been modified: the game is played for a fixed prize amount of 10,000 euros.
In the main round, the Olympics experts can choose a category they want, but the celebrity teams decide who they want to play against. The celebrities then also have to alternately choose a category with which they want to compete against the respective expert of Olympus. First the “Olympian” answers the question, then the celebrity team. Two rounds are played against each expert, so that all 18 questions are played.
Finally, the final is played. Here the celebrities compete against an "Olympian" drawn by lot. Everyone receives as many questions as their team answered correctly beforehand. The candidate with the lower number of questions begins. Whoever answered most of the questions correctly in the final wins the money. In the event of a tie, a tie question decides. The celebrities donate their profits to a good cause. If Olympus wins, the prize money will be distributed among ten app players drawn.
Current game variant
Since season 4, the candidates have been competing in the main round with Team Germany, consisting of app users who have registered for the program.
At the beginning of the game, the opponents alternately choose the categories in the first four rounds from three suggestions. In the fifth round a category is given. In addition to the subject areas known from the app, the NDR has added the “Tagesschau” topic with current questions. The categories "The 70s", "The 80s" and "The 90s" followed later. In the third season, “Adel”, “Mode”, “From Life” and “Germany” were added. Since the sixth season there have also been the categories "Brisant" and "Europe". With the seventh season, the categories “The 2010s” and “Natural Events” have been added.
round | Monetary value |
---|---|
1 | 1,000 euros |
2 | 1,000 euros |
3 | 2,000 euros |
4th | 2,000 euros |
5 | 5,000 euros |
The users of the app answer three questions in up to 29 categories. The answer option chosen by most of the users is considered a tip from the entire team. After Team Germany, the studio team and the team captain answer the same three questions. The team captain then finally decides which answer is logged in for Team Germany. The candidate team can use a joker twice in the main round. In this case, the most frequently given answer by the studio audience for this question is automatically logged in for you. Each question is assigned a monetary value. If either the candidate team or team Germany and the team captain answer the question correctly, they will receive the full value in their own prize pool. If both teams answer the question correctly, the monetary value is divided. If the app fails due to technical problems during the live broadcast, the team captain plays the main round on his own behalf for Team Germany.
The main round ends after 15 questions. The editorial team can also end the main round early with a timeout signal.
In the final, Team Germany is represented by the team captain, who plays against a member of the candidate team for the amount earned in the main round. Both have one minute to answer a maximum of nine questions correctly. The leading candidate begins. If there is no answer or an incorrect answer, the time stops and the opponent has the right to answer. Whoever is the first to answer nine questions correctly, or whoever answers most of the questions correctly, wins the duel. In the event of a tie, a tie question decides. If the team captain wins for Team Germany, 5,000 euros will be divided among ten app players drawn by lot, and the team captain will receive the remaining prize money. If the winnings are exactly 5,000 euros or less, the entire amount will be distributed among the app players and the Tamkapitän will get nothing. If the prominent candidate team wins, the winnings will be donated to a good cause. In addition, a guest will be drawn from the studio audience who will win 500 euros. The loser's winnings are forfeited.
Trivia
When the show debuted on May 12, 2014 in the first, over 1.4 million quiz duel users were online, according to Pilawa, and 187,000 people had registered for the TV version. However, due to overloaded servers, the “Team Germany” did not participate. Instead Pilawa improvised and let the studio audience compete against the studio candidates instead of “Team Germany”. The audience responded using voting machines designed for emergencies only. The duel was played to the end because the error could not be corrected during the broadcast. The audience won 22,000 euros by one point, which was distributed among them. Pilawa announced during the broadcast that an individual had hacked 15,000 servers worldwide. As a result, most of the online users received connection errors and were unable to participate. Jörg Pilawa publicly invited the person responsible for the attack on the show to come forward and take part in one of the next shows as a candidate. Legal consequences would not threaten, he let the hacker know live on TV.
In the following editions, too, the technical problems were initially not resolved, so that the candidate team had to play against the studio audience again.
The “Mallorcamädels” team from the ninth broadcast of the program on May 22, 2014 is currently the record holder of the studio candidates with 34,000 euros.
In episode three of the Quizduell broadcast, on May 14, 2014, Jörg Pilawa explained that, in addition to a denial-of-service attack, too ambitious goals of the Quizduell editorial team were responsible for overloaded servers. For example, the answers of the online users were originally supposed to be linked to data such as age, gender and state in order to offer public comparative statistics. The server infrastructure was not strong enough for that. In the background, however, they are still working on a solution. Pilawa made a bet during the broadcast: If the Quizduell app should not work in the coming week, he will play a guest role in Forbidden Love .
In issue four on May 15, 2014, Jan Hofer , chief spokesman for the Tagesschau , read out the questions from the Tagesschau category that was specially introduced for the show . Occasionally he also acted as spokesman for Team Germany.
In the fifth episode on May 16, 2014, Jörg Pilawa announced that on Monday, May 19, 2014 from 9:00 p.m., registered app users would receive random invitations via push notifications for online participation in the Tuesday, May 20, 2014. May 2014, should receive a scheduled broadcast. It was a limited focus group test designed to test the reliability and performance of the server infrastructure.
In the broadcast on Monday, May 19, 2014, Jörg Pilawas said that a selected group of registered Quizduell app users would take part in a focus group test on the same day at 9:00 p.m. On Tuesday, May 20, 2014, a large-scale test run, open to all registered users, should take place at the same time. After successful test phases, the first regular quiz duel broadcast with online participation took place on the following Wednesday.
In addition, in the second round, a team, consisting of actors from Verbotene Liebe , answered the questions in the Art & Culture category on behalf of the audience . In issue seven on May 20, 2014, comedian Bernhard Hoëcker answered the questions on behalf of the audience.
On Thursday, May 22nd, 2014, the first Quizduell celebrity special was broadcast. In the first round, the moderators Nazan Eckes , Alexander Bommes , Steffen Hallaschka and model Franziska Knuppe played against the app users from “Team Germany”. In the second round, actors Ben Becker , Peter Lohmeyer , his daughter Leila and adventurer Andreas Kieling competed . Since then, one primetime edition has been produced per season.
On Wednesday, May 28, 2014, the online functionality failed during the broadcast, so that the studio audience again had to step in as opponents of the quiz. The profit was shared between the online participants and the studio audience.
On Tuesday, January 27, 2015, a test broadcast was broadcast live on the Internet at 8 p.m. in order to test the functionality of the new Quizduell app created especially for the broadcast in the first . The users were able to compete against Tagesschau boss Jan Hofer. In the event of a “Team Germany” victory or a tie, five times 1000 euros were raffled off among all participants. A second test broadcast took place on Friday, January 30, 2015 at 11 p.m. In addition, a technology test was carried out on Monday, February 2, 2015 at 2 p.m., a trial round was carried out and various studio settings such as B. the commercial break were tested.
When the program started, Jörg Pilawa made a bet that the Quizduell app would work smoothly in its first program on February 2, 2015 and that all a maximum of 18 questions could be played with the app users. Oliver Pocher held against it. Since the app worked flawlessly, Pocher had to have Udo Walz 's hair tinted in color in the second quiz duel show .
In the broadcast on Monday, March 9, 2015, there were again technical problems with the data transfer of the voting results. The answers of the app players could be determined, but not forwarded. Therefore the game was closed to the app players. Since the voting results from the studio are in principle determined separately and then added to the results of “Team Germany”, the studio audience was able to continue the duel against the candidates. For this reason, a warm-up duel against the Mahlberg family was scheduled on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 4 p.m., with a raffle of 1,000 euros.
On Monday, March 23, 2015, a Germany special was broadcast with slightly different rules of the game, in which 16 moderators from the ARD regional magazines of the 16 federal states competed against “Team Germany”. All questions had a regional reference from the 16 federal states of Germany. In the preliminary round, each studio team member had to answer a question from their federal state, with 1000 euros being added to the prize money for each correct answer. In the following duel, due to the number of members of the studio team, only five rounds were played, in each of which three candidates answered in the studio. The remaining four candidates played in the last round. The regional teams donated their share of the profit of 1,187.50 euros to a good cause.
Before the start of the third season, another warm-up duel was held against the “Tierflug” team on Friday, August 21, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. and 1000 euros were raffled off.
From Monday, October 26th to Friday, October 30th, 2015, a variant of the game was carried out which was entitled "The Olympus Quiz Duel". Celebrities competed in the studio against the three best players in the quiz duel in the first app, who replaced “Team Germany”. Since the app players could not influence the overall result, in the "Quiz-Fire" round for each correctly answered question the prize money was credited to 1000 euros, there were no deductions for an incorrect answer. In the category selection, the contestants of Olympus were each allowed to choose a favorite category, but the celebrity teams decided who they want to play against. The celebrities also had to alternate between choosing a category with which they want to compete against the contestant of Olympus. First the candidate answered the question, then the celebrity team. If the celebrities did better than Olympus in a round, the winnings increased by 1000 euros. Finally, a final round was played, in which the victorious candidates entered. In the event of a tie, an open play-off question decided whether to make it to the final. In the final, the winning team again selected a category from which a candidate had to answer three open questions. If he was able to answer them correctly, the winnings were doubled.
From May 6, 2016, in season four, only the “Quiz duel Olymp” was broadcast on Fridays at 6:50 pm.
A week before the start of the fourth season, another test broadcast took place on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 8 p.m. “Team Germany” with captain Marvin Klinckmann won against Linda Hesse and Christin Stark 1,300 euros.
In the broadcast on Thursday, November 3, 2016, the end of the final was 8: 8, so a trick question had to decide the game. Since the broadcasting time was already over at this point in time, the rest of the program was recorded and made available for retrieval in the Das Erste: Mediathek and resolved in the program the next day. The same case occurred in the broadcast on Tuesday November 22, 2016. In addition, for the first time in the history of Quizduell , the team captain succeeded in answering all questions in the main round correctly.
Since the fifth season, Quizduell has been integrated into the ARD Quiz App, which was introduced as a play-along offer for several ARD quiz programs. For this purpose, two test duels of the Olymp variant took place on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 10 a.m. The live version was tested one day later at 7 p.m. In each of the tests, 100 euros were raffled off ten times among all participants.
At the quiz duel Olymp on May 4, 2018, Olympus answered all 18 questions correctly for the first time in history.
There were three special editions of the quiz duel during the 2018 World Cup . The programs ran between sports broadcasts at 6:30 p.m. The candidates could also choose the category "WM special". Due to the shorter broadcast time, only four rounds were played, with the amount of money increasing by 1,000 euros per round.
The Extra-Chance started at the beginning of the fourth season . This format runs Monday to Thursday following the TV broadcast as a live stream for the players of the ARD Quiz app. These form the "Team Germany". Here three more rounds are played. The app players choose a category and then answer three questions each. The resolution takes place in the live stream. In the end, ten times 50 euros will be raffled off among all participants. A teammate from the studio audience also receives 50 euros. This format was tested on Thursday, May 2, 2019 at 7 p.m. The ten winners each received 20 euros. The live show was tested the following day.
