Danube Swabia is a collective term for the predominantly German colonists and their descendants who were recruited by the Habsburg Monarchy in the 17th to the second half of the 19th century and who emigrated to the lands of the St. Stephen's Crown .
Only about 5-6 percent of German settlers actually came from Swabia , but they have been throughout the middle Danube region by their Magyar , South Slavic and Romanian neighbors as well as from the Bulgarian , Slovak and Czech immigrants Schwaben called. Until the end of the First World War, the settlers were also called Hungarian Germans .
The term Donauschwaben was coined in the early 1920s by the geographer Robert Sieger and spread in 1922 by the historian and National Socialist Hermann Rüdiger . The term was intended to represent a common contrast between the German minority and the other parts of the population that have been resident there for a long time. The terms Danube Bavaria and Danube Germans could not prevail.
The settlement areas lay essentially along the central course of the Danube in the Pannonian Plain , whose nationality and name changed frequently from the first settlement under the Habsburgs until the late 20th century. Today the areas lie within the borders of Hungary , Romania , Serbia and Croatia . The areas of Banat , Baranja , Batschka , Slavonia , Syrmia , Vojvodina and the Hungarian counties are partly historical, partly still officially used names of the settlement regions and are included in the list as a distinguishing feature.
The Danube Swabian ethnic group comprises the following ethnic groups:
- the Hungarian Germans with the exception of the East Burgenlanders
- the Yugoslav Germans from Vojvodina, Slavonia, Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia, but not the Oberkrainer and Gottscheer from Slovenia (see also Slovenian Germans )
- the Romanian Germans from the Banat ( Banat Swabians and Banat Berglanddeutsche ), also from the area around Arad , which is not assigned to the Banat, as well as the Sathmarer Swabians , but not the Transylvanian Saxons
The temporal delimitation begins with the settlement trains before the Swabian trains (1686–1720) . Around 1900, due to the increasing scarcity of land and the associated poverty of parts of the rural population, there was increased emigration, especially to the United States of America , in which many Danube Swabians also took part. In the final phase of the Second World War , the process of disintegration of the population group through flight, retaliation, deportation, displacement and later emigration began in the settlement areas. The majority of those who left the country integrated into the population of Germany and Austria, while smaller parts moved to the United States of America , Canada , Brazil , Argentina or Australia , among other places ; a small part of the Danube Swabian population remained in the former settlement areas. The work of numerous national associations and clubs worldwide is aimed at preserving the Danube Swabian culture; the continued existence of the Danube Swabians as an ethnic group is uncertain with the extinction of the experience generation and because of the now low presence in the former settlement areas. Due to the relationship between the Danube Swabians and their settlement areas, the inclusion of emigrated representatives of the ethnic group and their descendants in the list is limited to the first generation of personalities who were no longer born in the settlement areas.

Remarks
-
↑ The title Acta Succevorum for the acts of settlement with Charles VI. (HRR) attests to the Swabian name since 1711. The name Schwabe was passed on for use by the Viennese administration in the settlement areas, as a large number of the first settlers after the Turkish occupation actually came to Hungary from what is now Baden-Württemberg. The tribal name found its way into the languages of Southeast Europe as a collective name for all post-Turkish German settlers in the Carpathian Basin. The "Magyar, Serbian and Slavic element [... would have] everything that is in German under the collective name 'Schwáb'", as in Nagl, Zeidler and Castle: German-Austrian Literary History , subchapter The "Swabians" in southern Hungary. This pars pro toto designation of foreign peoples was adopted by the German settlers themselves in order to satisfy the feeling of togetherness with a uniform name. Even Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn , who saw himself as a "son of a Swabian manufacturer", used the term in 1911 Schwaben as a collective term for the Germans in the field of historical Hungary and led "Hungarian Germans" and "Schwabentum" on as synonyms. The common designation of Germanness can today be taken as an insult because of its pejorative aftertaste, which was most pronounced in the Horthy era , regardless of the fact that the Hungarian Germans call themselves Swabians . Protest against the designation Swabian and Swabian is on the one hand in West Hungary and in Deutschpilsen, where it violates historical tradition, on the other hand the expression was rejected by the Hungarian-German bourgeoisie. The term Swabia also received a relevant social connotation, as it named the group of German farmers and artisans. As a result of the consciousness-related separation of the citizen from the peasant, Swabian was understood to mean “village German Hungary” in contrast to the urban of the German bourgeoisie. In parts of the former Yugoslavia , the unofficial term Švabo or Švaba is still used today for the colloquial term used by Germans .

↑ "According to estimates by the" Documentation Working Group "in Munich, in 1998 about 1,400,000 Danube Swabians in 1940, or of the 1,235,000 who survived war, expulsion and internment, were still around 40% as of the year 2000 , d. H. around 490,000. According to this information, around 78,000 remained in their home countries: in Hungary, 32,000 and in Serbia and Croatia a total of around 8,000. […] The vast majority of those who survived after 1945, around 810,000, settled in the German-speaking area, including around 660,000 in Germany and around 150,000 in Austria. The following figures can be assumed overseas: USA 70,000, Canada 40,000, Brazil 9,000, Argentina 6,000 and Australia 5,000. Another 10,000 or so Danube Swabians have settled in other countries around the world. […] Resettler groups rarely return to their former home. "

- Foreword to the website of the HOG Bulkes (Batschka) , Karl Weber: “With the extinction of the experience generation, the more than 300-year history of the Danube Swabians will in principle also come to an end. [...] Our descendants have made their home in their new home countries, wherever. We, who were still born in our old homeland, are happy about it. We can step down from the world stage in the good hope that our children and grandchildren will be spared the kind of fate we had to suffer. "( Hog-bulkes.de )
