Benjamin Jones (born April 13, 1787 in Winchester , Virginia , † April 24, 1861 in Wooster , Ohio ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . March 4, 1833 to March 3, 1837 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 18th  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Jones was born in Winchester. He and his parents moved to Washington , Pennsylvania . There he went to school. There he learned the profession of cabinet maker . In 1812 he moved to Wooster, Ohio, where he worked as a carpenter. In 1815 he was an arbitrator and in 1818 commissioner in Wayne County . From 1821 to 1822 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives . In 1828 he was a member of the Electoral College . Between 1829 and 1832 he was a member of the State Senate .

In 1832, Jones was elected to the US House of Representatives as representative of the newly created 18th District of Ohio. He was re-elected once. Between 1835 and 1837 he was chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of War . In 1836 he was no longer nominated for election by his party. He retired into private life in Wooster and died there in 1861.

Jones was married to Hannah Straughn Vanemmon. Both had a son with Ohio Franklin Jones.
