John Berry (politician)

John Berry (born April 26, 1833 in Carey , Crawford County , Ohio , † May 18, 1879 in Upper Sandusky , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Born in what is now Wyandot County , John Berry attended public schools in his homeland and then graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware . After a subsequent law degree at Cincinnati College , the later University of Cincinnati , and his admission to the bar in 1857, he began to work in Upper Sandusky in this profession. In 1862 he became a district attorney in Wyandot County. Two years later he was re-elected in this office. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1864 he was elected mayor of Upper Sandusky.

In the congressional election of 1872 Berry was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded James Monroe on March 4, 1873 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1874, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1875 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, John Berry practiced again as a lawyer in Upper Sandusky. He died there on May 18, 1879.
