William Lawrence (1859)

William Lawrence (born September 2, 1814 in Old Washington , Guernsey County , Ohio , †  September 8, 1895 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1857 and 1859 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Lawrence enjoyed a classical education. In 1835 he graduated from Jefferson College in Canonsburg ( Pennsylvania ). Then he worked in agriculture. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In the presidential election of 1848 he was the Democratic elector for the defeated candidate Lewis Cass . In 1843 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives ; in 1856 and 1857 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1851 he was a delegate to a constitutional convention of his state.

In the congressional elections of 1856 , Lawrence was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 17th  constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Charles J. Albright on March 4, 1857 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1858, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1859 . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war . During his tenure as a MP, Lawrence chaired the Treasury's Expenditure Control Committee.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, William Lawrence worked in commerce in Old Washington. He served again in the Ohio Senate in 1867, 1885, and 1886. He was also the chairman of the local state penal institution. He died on September 8, 1895 in Old Washington, where he was also buried.
