Becker (family name)
Becker is a German family name .
Origin and synonymous names
The name auf -er is a more recent formation of the older forms of the name Beck and Becke . Mostly it is the job title of the baker . The name can, however, more rarely (like the name Bach ) go back to someone living near a brook (Beck) ; this is especially true in northern Germany. The old forms of the name Beck and Becke are particularly common in Upper Germany .
The spelling baker is seldom and mostly found in northern Germany .
The name Backer and Brodbeck as well as the Latinized form Pistorius also mean “by profession baker” .
Derivatives and compositions
In addition to the Beckers and Beckert extensions, there are some compositions with Beck (er) such as B. Kuchenbecker , Beckmann or Beckenbauer (a farmer who was also a baker).
