Waldviertel Weinviertel
Mostviertel Industrial district

The list of administrative districts and statutory cities of Lower Austria gives an overview of the 20  administrative districts and 4  statutory cities of the largest Austrian federal state.

The districts in the administrative structure of Lower Austria

The smallest districts in terms of area are the statutory cities of Krems an der Donau , Wiener Neustadt , St. Pölten and Waidhofen an der Ybbs , in that order. The smallest district apart from these is the Mödling district , the largest area is the Zwettl district .

If you look at the number of inhabitants, Waidhofen an der Ybbs is by far the smallest district, Baden occupies the top end of the statistics. The most densely populated district is Wiener Neustadt, the least densely populated is Lilienfeld .

In September 2015 it became known that the Vienna-Umgebung district was to be dissolved. The 21 municipalities became part of the surrounding districts on January 1, 2017.

Districts and quarters of Lower Austria

The landscape of Lower Austria is divided into four districts:

These quarters have different geographical structures. While in the Mostviertel the foothills of the Limestone Alps with mountain heights around 2000  m above sea level. A. shape the landscape, the Waldviertel is mainly shaped by the granite plateau of the Bohemian Massif . In the northeast lies the hilly Weinviertel, which drops into the flat Marchfeld in the east of the country, separated by the Danube from the Vienna Basin in the south, which in turn is separated from the Vienna Woods by the thermal line running in north-south direction . These quarters therefore also form different settlement structures.

Since the division into the quarters took place before the 17th century and is no longer of any political significance today, they are not based on the district boundaries. In popular understanding, the administrative districts are perceived as a kind of sub-unit of the neighborhoods, although individual districts are clearly located in several quarters, for example the Melk district. Even the quarter borders are not clear in certain areas like along the Danube in the Wachau.
