Complete medal table |
The 16th IAAF World Championships found from 4 to 13 August 2017 in London Stadium , the former Olympic Stadium of London instead.
Award
The world association IAAF awarded the competitions on November 11, 2011 in Monaco . After London withdrew its application for the 2015 World Championships and thus Beijing became the host, the British capital was chosen to host the 2017 event. The British capital prevailed against the application from Doha in Qatar with 16:10 votes. Barcelona dropped out of the race at the beginning of September 2011 because the Spanish state refused to give financial guarantees for the event.
Stadion
The World Championships were held in London Stadium in London district of Stratford instead. The stadium, which was built for the 2012 Olympic Games , has had a capacity of 60,000 seats since it was renovated after the Olympic Games. Since 2016 the stadium has hosted the football matches of the London football club West Ham United .
Competitions
There was only one change in the competition program: for women, a second walking distance was added to the offer with the 50 km walk . For the first time, the same number of disciplines were on the program for women and men. The competitions differed only insignificantly: the hurdles for women were slightly lower than for men, the short hurdle distance was over 100 meters for women and 110 meters for men. Otherwise, only the weights of the impact and throwing devices as well as the number and individual disciplines in the all-around event differed: the men had a decathlon , the women a heptathlon in the program.
Organization and environment
Broadcast rights
Germany
In Germany, the competitions were shown on ARD and ZDF programs . Both channels alternated in daily reporting and in the evening main program. Furthermore, due to the large number of disciplines, both broadcasters offered an extensive live stream offer on the broadcasters' respective internet portals. All of the competitions that were relevant from a German perspective and that were not shown on television were shown there.
Austria
In Austria, the ORF broadcast the world championships on ORF SPORT + . All evening sessions as well as the morning sessions on weekends could be seen on the sports channel.
Switzerland
The company SRF broadcast the world championships in Switzerland. The TV broadcast from London put a special focus on the Swiss athletes. As in Austria, the company showed all evening sessions as well as the morning sessions on the weekend.
Tickets
Advance sales for tickets for the athletics competitions in the stadium began on August 1, 2016, one year before the opening of the World Championships. The prices of the tickets varied depending on the category in the stadium and the final disciplines of the respective sessions. The ticket prices were divided into categories A, B, C and D, for categories C and D special tickets for children were available.
category | Price ( £ ) | Price ( € ) | Price (children) |
---|---|---|---|
A. | 95-155 | 105-172 | - |
B. | 75-125 | 83-138 | |
C. | 60-80 | 66-88 | £ 9.58 (€ 10.63) |
D. | 35-45 | 38-49 |
mascot
To determine a mascot for the world championships, the local organizing committee started a national competition in cooperation with the BBC , in which children between the ages of six and 15 were asked to design their own mascot. An internal jury, in which Jessica Ennis-Hill was also represented, selected the 30 best suggestions from the more than 4,000 suggestions received . In April 2017 was Hero the Hedgehog (Engl. Igel ), designed by a nine year old girl chosen as the official mascot.
Norovirus
Impairments to the event
The competitions were affected by a norovirus outbreak in many teams, as a result of which a number of athletes did not compete or could not call up their full performance or were not allowed to start because of the 48-hour quarantine rule. The German team issued isolation and quarantine, disinfectants were readily available at every corner of the hotel, food was served, the athletes and supervisors were given behavioral measures, and newly arriving athletes were accommodated in other hotels. The executive director of Sport Idriss Gonschinska and his staff were busy for days developing behavioral guidelines that had to be constantly adapted, finding a hotel for the newly arriving athletes and coaches, coordinating the changes to the transfers to the training and competition facilities, and the athletes also had to go up to In the meantime, largely avoid physiotherapeutic measures for the arrival of new therapists who are not actually planned. Which athletes fell ill was not disclosed due to the obligation of confidentiality .
Criticism and controversy about start bans
Due to the outbreak of the highly contagious noroviruses , there were a. Controversies about the starting rights of the Botswana sprinter Isaac Makwala , who had qualified for the final of the 400-meter run , but was not allowed to take part because the IAAF, on the recommendation of the public health authority, Public Health England, refused him entry to the stadium , because a 48-hour quarantine was ordered. As a result of this quarantine, the sprinter also missed the 200 meter lead , so that he was initially not qualified for the final. Makwala spoke of "sabotage" in connection with his suspension. The IAAF President Sebastian Coe denied these allegations. After the 48-hour quarantine was over, Makwala was allowed to catch up with the preliminary run as a single starter in a specially scheduled 200-meter run to the great applause of the spectators and qualified for the semifinals in 20.20 seconds.
Participating Nations
A total of 2034 athletes (954 women and 1080 men) from 205 nations were registered, which is around 100 participants more than at the same time before the 2015 World Championships in Beijing .
Athletic performance
The results of this World Cup were on an overall high level.
- A world record was set:
- 50 km walk - Inês Henriques , Portugal : 4:05:56 h. This discipline was on the women's program for the first time.
- There were also two world championship records:
- 50 km walk - Yohann Diniz , France : 3:33:12 h
- 3000 meter obstacle course - Emma Coburn , USA : 9: 02.58 min
- In addition to the world record of 50 km walking, five other new continental records were set:
- 4 x 100 meter relay , European record - Great Britain : 37.47 s
- 20 km walk , South American record - Erica De Sena, Brazil : 1:26:59 h
- 50 km walking, Asian record - Yin Hang, People's Republic of China : 4:08:58 h
- 50 km walk, American record - Kathleen Burnett, USA: 4:21:51 h
- Discus throw , Oceania record - Dani Stevens , Australia : 69.64 m
- In addition, fifteen other national records were set - see results of the individual disciplines .
In the medal standings, the United States regained its supremacy after Kenya was at the top two years ago for the first time . With ten world champions, the USA had twice as many title holders on the books this time as the second-placed nation Kenya. It was followed by South Africa with three world champions each - six medals in total - and France - five medals in total. In the end, four countries each had two world champions in their ranks: People's Republic of China - a total of seven medals, Great Britain - a total of six medals, Ethiopia - a total of five medals - and Poland - a total of eight medals. Russia , which was used to success at previous World Championships, did not appear in this ranking. Russia was excluded from participation by the IAAF due to the devastating doping problem there.
doping
Suspension of Russia
As a result of the Russian doping scandal, which already led to the exclusion of all Russian athletes from the 2016 Olympic Games , no athletes flying the Russian flag were admitted to the World Championships in London. 19 Russian athletes were nevertheless allowed to participate in the competitions under the neutral flag. The prerequisite for permission was that the athletes concerned had to prove that they were not directly involved in the Russian doping scandal.
Doping cases at these world championships
- The Ukrainian sprinters Olessja Powch and Olha Semljak were convicted of doping a day before the start of the world championships and were forbidden to start.
- During the world championships, the Zambian sprinter Kabange Mupopo tested positive for testosterone and was banned. She initially finished seventh in the final.
- The results of the Nigerian Margaret Bamgbose, who had been eliminated in the semi-finals, were subsequently canceled.
Hyperandrogenemia
At the World Championships, the discussion about increased testosterone levels in female athletes was again a topic after the World Athletics Association (IAAF) published a study on hyperandrogenemia at the beginning of July 2017 , which shows that women with high testosterone levels have an advantage in the range of 1.8 to 4.5 Percent in the disciplines 400 m , 400 m hurdles , 800 m , hammer throw and pole vault . In the 800-meter run, this corresponds to a difference of approximately two seconds, over 1500 meters accordingly more. From May 2011 to July 2015, the IAAF stipulated that female athletes with a hormone level that did not meet the norm had to undergo therapy in order to stay below the established guide value of 10 nmol per liter. This regulation was suspended by the International Court of Justice CAS 2015 due to a lawsuit by the Indian sprinter Dutee Chand against her disqualification at the Commonwealth Games at the end of 2014 because of excessively high testosterone levels, with the condition that scientific evidence be provided that hyperandrogenic female athletes have a clear performance advantage to have. The suspension was accompanied by a significantly increased performance at Caster Semenya , who dominated the 800-meter run with the intersex runners Francine Niyonsaba and Margaret Wambui . The CAS decision on the results of the study is still pending.
Qualification standards
The qualification for the 10,000 meters , the marathon , the walking competitions , relays and all-around competitions had to be achieved in the period from January 1, 2016 to July 23, 2017. For all other competitions the interval ranged from October 1, 2016 to July 23, 2017.
