From Hundsbach to the A 93

The B 299 begins in continuation of the Czech Silnice II / 214 on the Czech border near Hundsbach in the Upper Palatinate. Running in a south-easterly direction, it passes Waldsassen and touches Mitterteich , before being replaced by the A 93 for almost twelve kilometers .

    Between A 93 and A 6

As a result, the B 299 passes Reuth , Krummennaab and Erbendorf , with the Erbendorf bypass running at the same time as the B 22 . After the junction from the B 22, it goes through the Hessenreuther Wald to Pressath , where the B 470 is crossed, and shortly afterwards to Grafenwöhr , where the B 299 runs for kilometers past the military training area of the same name . Then the towns of Freihung , Gibbach and Hahnbach are affected before the main road reaches the independent city of Amberg . The Amberg bypass is followed by a section in the 2 + 1 system with a maximum speed of 120 km / h, which serves as a feeder to the A 6 .

    Between A 6 and A 3

After connecting to the A 6, the B 299 becomes two-lane again and leads in a south-westerly direction via Ursensollen , Kastl , Lauterhofen and Pilsach under the A 3 to Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz , which is touched by the bypass to the west. A section of this bypass has been developed into four lanes as a feeder to the B 299a and A 3.

    Between A 3 and A 93

Behind Neumarkt, the B 299 runs south along the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal, past Sengenthal and through Mühlhausen , until shortly before Berching the Main-Danube Canal swings into a course parallel to the B 299. After passing through the town of Beilngries in the Altmühltal , the B 299 climbs sharply and now runs about 30 kilometers south over a plain sloping flat towards the Danube . The road leads past Altmannstein , crosses Mindelstetten and touches Pförring , until Neustadt with the unmistakable oil refinery is reached beyond the Danube .

From here, the B 299 runs for a few kilometers together with the B 16 in an easterly direction before it branches off to the southeast. It connects to the B 301 and A 93 near Siegenburg .

    Between A 93 and A 92

Then the eastern Hallertau is crossed. The main road leads past Pfeffenhausen , then crosses some villages in the municipality of Weihmichl and Furth (the only remaining local through-roads on the busy section between Neustadt and Landshut). After the bypass of Pfettrach , the B 299 at Altdorf experiences an offset of almost three kilometers from the A 92 .

    Between A 92 and A 94

It crosses the urban area of the independent city of Landshut on Konrad-Adenauer-Straße. There are regular traffic jams there, as it narrows on both sides from two to one lane in each direction in the area of the two Isar bridges and the island of Mitterwöhr . After leaving the urban area, it rises sharply on the so-called Kasernenberg (Isarhangleite) in a three-lane expansion and leads in a south-easterly direction past Geisenhausen and Vilsbiburg , before it runs a few kilometers in common with the B 388 in an easterly direction. Then it branches off again and leads in a south-easterly direction through Egglkofen and to Neumarkt-St. Veit over to the A 94 .

From the A 94 to Altenmarkt ad Alz

After being replaced by the A 94 for around nine kilometers , it crosses the Inn near Neuötting , touches Altötting and Unterneukirchen , before a less developed section is reached by passing through Garching . The B 299 continues in the Alztal through the towns of Tacherting , Trostberg and Altenmarkt , where it ends at the confluence with the B 304 .

    Replacements

    Sections like

were replaced by sections of the motorway.

Partly the B 299 runs together with other federal highways.

    history

    Previous routes and names

When it was originally numbered in 1937, what was then Reichsstraße  299 did not go beyond the current route. According to a road map from 1941, only the route south of Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz was designated Reichsstraße 299, while the section to Mitterteich was part of Reichsstraße 15 coming from Karlsbad .

    costs

The budget for the Mühlhausen bypass (as of 2017) was EUR 21.9 million. The cost of the Tanzfleck bypass was estimated at 6 million euros in 2017.

    Traffic volume

Change in traffic volume on the B 299 determined during the recurring traffic censuses of 2010 and 2015

While the northern part of the federal road is relatively lightly used, the section between Neustadt an der Donau and Altenmarkt an der Alz has a significantly higher volume of traffic. This section of the B 299 forms the connection axis between the Bavarian chemical triangle and the industrial area between Neustadt and Ingolstadt .

It is particularly polluted in the urban area of Landshut. In 2010 this was around 18,500 vehicles per day at Landshut-Nord (where it crosses the A 92), around 24,000 vehicles in the Konrad-Adenauer-Strasse area and around 13,700 vehicles per day at Landshut Ost in the direction of Weihbüchl.

There is currently only one permanent counting point on the B 299: number 9292 Amberg (s). The volume of traffic there has decreased from an average of 12,000 vehicles per day in 2004 to 10,000 in 2014. The proportion of heavy goods traffic has decreased by more than two thirds from 2004 with an average of 3,500 trucks per day to around 1,000 in 2014. The greatest decrease was recorded in the years 2004 to 2006. The volume of traffic has remained almost constant since 2009.

2004 to 2014 *): Average vehicle traffic volume on the B 299 recorded by the permanent counting point 9292 Amberg (s)
2004 to 2014 *): Average truck traffic volume on the B 299 recorded by the permanent counting point 9292 Amberg (s)

    Conservation measures

    Landshut area

The load-bearing capacity of the two B 299 Isar bridges was checked between 2013 and 2015. Due to the condition of the shear reinforcement, both bridges will have to be rebuilt within the next five to ten years. The state building authority in Landshut anticipates a planning lead up to a realization of around five years, a construction time of around one and a half years per bridge structure and costs of twelve to 15 million euros.

2014: In summer, the road surface, the banquets and the crash barriers were renewed in two construction phases from the Moniberg junction (City of Landshut) to Hohenegglkofen and on a three-kilometer section between the Hohenegglkofen junction with the end of construction at Fimbach .

2015: From mid-April it is planned to renovate the bridge at Piflas on Konrad-Adenauer-Straße in Landshut over the four-lane B 15 there. Three months are planned for the first construction phase. The bridge will only be accessible to the south. The second construction phase is planned for mid-July to October. The bridge can be driven in one lane in both directions.

2016: On May 9, the renovation of the B 299 in the area of Konrad-Adenauer-Straße began. The curbs and the sidewalks and bike paths will be repaired and partially widened by July. Corresponding work in the area of the two Isar bridges is in progress. At the beginning of August, the road surface will be renewed from the Landshut-Nord junction with the A 92 to Schützen- / Schönaustraße. A noise-reducing covering is applied. The city of Landshut and Markt Ergolding bear the costs for the renovation of the sidewalks, for the repair of the cycle paths and the renewal of the road surface of the federal government.

    Expansion planning

Even further south - in the Alz valley - the state of development of the B 299 is comparatively poor due to numerous through-roads, dangerous crossings and traffic lights.

With the temporary discontinuation of the further construction of the B 15 newly announced on January 19, 2015 by Bavaria's Minister of the Interior Herrmann, the topic of multi-lane expansion of the B 299 came back into the focus of politics.

    Bypasses

For the towns of Garching , Tacherting , Trostberg and Altenmarkt , bypass roads are already being considered, whereby the latter would run in common with the B 304 .

    Mühlhausen bypass

Budget funds were set for this project in 2017.

It is now (as of September 2019) as good as finished.

    Tanzfleck bypass

A planning approval decision has been in place for this project since September 30, 2015, but a complaint has been made (as of August 2017).

    Southern district of Landshut

With the construction of the bypasses of Geisenhausen in the 1990s, Vilsbiburg around the turn of the millennium and Neumarkt-Sankt Veit in 2012, the disturbances for residents south of Landshut have already been significantly reduced. With the new construction of the A 94 and the bypasses of Neuötting, Altötting and Unterneukirchen, the traffic situation in the Inn-Salzach area has already been defused.

    Northern district of Landshut

With the temporary closure of a new extension of the B 15 in January 2015, the issue of bypasses in the northern district of Landshut returned to the focus of politics. A bypass has been sought in the towns of Oberneuhausen, Untersteuhausen and Weihmichl for a long time . In the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003 , these projects are included as a two-lane version in further requirements with the serial numbers 338 (OU Neuhausen - length 3.8 km) and 339 (OU Weihmichl - length 4.5 km) and with investment costs of 6.7 million euros or 8.2 million euros. In 2006 planning law existed for this and a regional planning procedure was started. An approved draft plan is available for the Weihmichl area and the planning approval documents are in progress. The Bavarian Ministry of the Interior is striving to obtain building rights for Weihmichl by 2017. The draft planning for the Neuhausen bypass has been completed.

The "Bürgerinitiative local bypass" Weichmichl / Arth " (BIOWA) fights for appropriate bypasses of the places Weihmichl and Arth and thus for a corresponding inclusion of the projects in the urgent need of the federal traffic route plan which is currently being drawn up general category urgent need (VB) without priority level congestion removal (VB-E).

    Osttangente Landshut

In order to relieve the B 299 in the area of the Isar crossings near Landshut, an "Osttangente Landshut" has been under discussion for more than a decade. A report from 2002 spoke of a relief of 25 percent. In 2012, the issue came to a standstill due to a rejection of the Ergolding municipal council regarding the route proposal at the time. At the end of October 2014, a new route proposal was presented at a joint meeting of the Landshut District Council, the Landshut City Council and the Ergolding City Council. In December 2014 it was decided to check its feasibility. After the cabinet decision of the Bavarian State Government of February 3, 2015, to register an east-south bypass Landshut as part of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030, the implementation of the feasibility study was postponed. A traffic report by the Free State of Bavaria should clarify whether an east bypass is required next to an east-south bypass Landshut.

    Trivia

Until June 30, 2015 there was generally no toll for trucks under the Federal Trunk Road Toll Act (BFStrMG) on the B 299. Since July 1, 2015, the 1.5 km section between the Amberg-West junction and the Amberg-West junction has been subject to a toll. Since July 1, 2018, federal roads have generally been subject to tolls for trucks over 7.5 tons.

For the new construction of a four-lane federal road, the following gross area requirements (line widths including ancillary areas, embankments and cuttings) are assumed:

    • without hard shoulder: 36 m in level terrain, 56 m in moving relief or lowland areas and 65 m in strongly moving relief
    • with hard shoulder: 40 m in level terrain, 60 m in moving relief or lowland area and 70 m in strongly moving relief.

The following applies to a three-lane expansion:

    • without hard shoulder: 28.5 m in level terrain, 45 m in moving relief or lowland area and 52 m in strongly moving relief
    • with hard shoulder: 32.5 m in level terrain, 49 m in moving relief or lowland area and 57 m in strongly moving relief.

For a two-lane federal road, the values are as follows:

    • without hard shoulder: 21 m in level terrain, 33.5 m in moving relief or lowland area and 39 m in strongly moving relief
    • with hard shoulder: 25 m in level terrain, 37.5 m in moving relief or lowland area and 44 m in strongly moving relief.
