List of important German films
This list contains German films that have been particularly successful internationally or nationally, have participated in important film awards or are recognized as important in the professional world. Unless otherwise stated, visitor numbers are national and not global.
Productions from the Federal Republic of Germany , the German Democratic Republic and the German Reich are cited as “ German films ”, but not Austrian or Swiss films.
Admission criteria
A German film can be included in the list if it meets one of the following or equivalent criteria:
- Highest awards: German film award as best film , award in the main competition of an A festival , nomination or award at the European film award , the Academy Award or the Golden Globes .
- Numerous significant awards such as the Bavarian Film Prize or subsidiary categories of the German Film Prize.
- Exceptionally high audience participation. For films that were eligible for the golden screen , their profit is considered sufficient, i.e. 3 million viewers in Germany.
- Combination of very high audience figures with important awards.
- Films consistently rated as particularly important in the specialist literature; individual criticisms or one's own views are not sufficient.
- Inclusion in the top 100 of the most important German films in the survey by the German Kinematheksverbund on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of German film or in the film canon of the Federal Agency for Civic Education.
- TV films that won a main prize at various of the most important national awards and also received international attention.
The reason for inclusion in the list should be stated with the respective film entry.
