List of castles and palaces in Saxony
The list of castles and palaces in Saxony is a directory of castles, palaces, manors and fortresses in today's Free State of Saxony . The list is arranged by district. Ornamental and replicas that were never used as residential buildings or for defense are not listed .
In a compilation of all castles in Saxony by Gerhard Billig and Heinz Müller, 821 reliably verifiable structures are recorded, including around 150 fortifications that are directly historically mentioned as "castrum, munitio, sloss, feste" or "hus". In 2006, Heinz Müller and Heyko Dehn named 723 high and late medieval fortifications that have been recorded by modern research in Saxony, from which they in turn selected 93 objects that are “interesting for tourists, that is, with building remains, still offer remarkable visual value and left traces in Saxon history ”.
