List of Roman Catholic Bishops in the United States
The list of Roman Catholic Bishops in the United States lists all living bishops of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States, including the five outer areas . The Roman Catholic Church in the USA consists of 176 dioceses of the Latin Church, 18 eparchies of the Eastern Catholic Churches , the archdiocese of the US military ordinariate and the staff ordinariate Kathedra Petri , whose director, even if he is not a bishop, is on an equal footing with this.
The 176 Latin dioceses are divided into 32 ecclesiastical provinces . In every province there is an archbishopric led by a metropolitan and at least one suffragan diocese . In some dioceses there are one or more auxiliary bishops . In addition, there are two metropolitans of the Eastern Catholic Churches. The head of the US military ordinariate is also an archbishop. Since Francis was created as cardinal in October 2018, five archbishoprics have been led by cardinals: Boston ( Seán O'Malley ), Chicago ( Blase Cupich ), Galveston-Houston ( Daniel DiNardo ), Newark ( Joseph Tobin ) and New York ( Timothy Dolan ). Four archbishopric have an Archbishop Emeritus who is a cardinal: Detroit ( Adam Maida ), Los Angeles ( Roger Mahony ), Philadelphia ( Justin Rigali ), and Washington ( Donald Wuerl ). Three other archbishoprics have former archbishops who became cardinal after their tenure there: Baltimore ( Edwin Frederick O'Brien ), Denver ( James Stafford ) and Saint Louis ( Raymond Burke ).
All bishops, active or retired, in the United States and the US Virgin Islands are members of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).
