The Download Festival is a three day music festival held annually in Donington Park in England and has been taking place since 2003. The performing artists play rock music of the various subgenres . Donington Park has already hosted other festivals such as the Monsters of Rock from 1980 to 1996 and Ozzfest 2002.
history
The Download Festival has been held annually at Donington Park race track since 2003. This makes it the successor to the Monsters of Rock. The first edition in 2003 was a joint event between promoters Stuart Galbraith , Tom Pyke and Andy Copping. Initially two days (as opposed to the one-day Monsters of Rock) the festival was extended to three days in 2005. The festival gathers between 90,000 and 120,000 rock fans over these three days.
The name comes from a new marketing concept that the organizers had established in the age of the Internet. The tickets could be used to purchase audio files from the performing artists. The "Download Dog" was established as a mascot.
Download Festival 2003
The first download festival took place from May 31st to June 1st, 2003. The performances took place on two stages, the main stage ("Main Stage") and the secondary stage ("Scuzz Stage"), which were played on both days. The headliners were originally supposed to be Iron Maiden and Limp Bizkit , but since Limp Bizkit couldn't participate, the second headliner became Audioslave . Metallica actually wanted to step in for Audioslave, but they already had a headlining commitment at the Reading and Leeds Festivals , so they could only play one unannounced appearance on the side stage on Sunday afternoon. The number of visitors was quite high, Iron Maiden played in front of about 45,000 fans, Audioslave as the second headliner reached an approximate audience of 38,000

Download Festival 2004
In 2004 a second secondary stage was added. This time the two secondary stages were called "Snickers 'Game On' Stage" and "Barfly Stage" and, together with the main stage, formed a performance area for a total of 72 bands between June 5th and 6th. Characteristic for 2004 were a number of mishaps when the bands performed. So SOiL was late for their performance on Saturday and then appeared on the Drowning Pool show on Sunday , playing the Drowning Pool song "Bodies" and their own song "Halo". Static-X also missed their performance that day because their bus broke down. The next day the problems continued. The Slayer gig wasn't missed, but their gear wasn't working properly. Damageplan performed for Slayer on the main stage, Slayer then played their show later that evening on the side stage. However, most of the reports came from Metallica, this year's headliner with Linkin Park , when drummer Lars Ulrich had to be rushed to the hospital shortly before the show. After an hour and a half had passed, singer James Hetfield explained to the audience what had happened and they began to play drums with Dave Lombardo (Slayer) at short notice , who was replaced by Joey Jordison after two songs . Ulrich's drum technician Flemming Larsen also played a long song.
Scotland
On June 2nd and 3rd a kind of pre-festival was held in Glasgow Green, a park in Glasgow , where nine selected bands performed. These bands were spread over two days. Metallica and Linkin Park performed, i.e. the bands that were also headliners at the actual festival, Slipknot, Korn, HIM, Lostprophets (the only band that did not also perform on 5th / 6th), Iggy and the Stooges, The Distillers and machine head. Metallica played in front of around 25,000 people, despite the large crowd the festival was not a financial success and it was therefore not continued.

Download Festival 2005
The third download festival took place from June 10th to June 12th, 2005, this time for the first time over three days. This time the side stages were named "Snickers Stage" and "Napster Stage". On the 11th, the musical day on the main stage was officially referred to as Ozzfest. Billy Idol , who played in Great Britain again after a very long time, made a special appearance . He also played a cover version of the Van Halen hit " Jump ".
Feeder frontman Grant Nicholas was so touched by the excited crowds that he smashed his green Fender Jazzmaster guitar on stage. Parts of it got into the audience. Even Lemmy met with the DKT / MC5 and Gilby Clarke on to play the song "Back in the US," a song of the influential rock 'n' roll musician Chuck Berry .

Download Festival 2006
In 2006, the download festival was again three days, this time between June 9th and 11th. According to the organizer, over 75,000 visitors came. This time the headliners were Tool , Guns n 'Roses and Metallica again. There was an almost identical incident as in 2004, again a musician had to go to the hospital shortly before the show started, this time it was the Korn singer Jonathan Davis . He had gone to the hospital on concerns about a couple of bruises . There they found out that he had a rare blood disease and therefore could not occur. Korn replaced them with the singers Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Dez Fafara ( DevilDriver ), Jesse Hasek ( 10 Years ), Benji Webbe ( Skindred ), M. Shadows ( Avenged Sevenfold ) and Matt Heafy ( Trivium ). Metallica played the entire album this time, especially for the 20th anniversary of Master of Puppets 'release, and Guns N' Roses played songs from the then unreleased album Chinese Democracy . Side stage names this time were "Gibson / Myspace Stage", "Snickers Bowl Stage", on which only relatively unknown bands appeared, and again the "Snickers Stage".
There were also problems with the performance of Guns N 'Roses, where bottles were thrown onto the stage, on the contents of which singer Axl Rose then slipped. When bassist Tommy Stinson was hit with what appeared to be a urine-filled bottle, he put down his instrument and left the stage. After the song, he came back and continued playing, but warned the audience that if there were any further problems, the performance would be ended. The rest of the show went off without a hitch.
On the last night of the festival there was another unpleasant incident when a fire was kindled on the site by several festival visitors. The police arrested twelve people and the fire brigade had to put out the fire. An additional nuisance turned out to be several people who had taken the barricades, which were originally used to separate the camping area and the path, and thus blocked the fire truck's path to the fire. The police reacted with violence and opened a way for the fire brigade, and many bystanders were also involved in this action.

Ireland
In 2006 there was another festival, the Download Festival Ireland, which was held on June 9th and 11th, parallel to the other festival. The venue was the RDS Showgrounds , with a total of around 70,000 visitors. The headliners were the same as at the main festival, except for Tool, who only performed at the main festival. There were two stages, but only 15 bands appeared on the two days. This was due to the fact that, due to the proximity to local residents, you only had a limited playing time from 3pm to 10pm. Well-known bands that performed on the main stage alongside the headliners were Funeral for a Friend, Bullet for My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold and Alice in Chains. These bands all performed in Donington as well. The main attractions on the backstage were Therapy and Stone Sour. Actually, Alice in Chains was only supposed to play on the side stage, but due to the failure of the Korn singer in Donington, their appearance in Ireland fell flat and so Alice in Chains jumped in for Korn on the main stage.
Download Festival 2007
The Download Festival 2007 took place from June 8th to 10th. A new feature at the festival was the broadcast of performances by a number of bands on the Internet. The headliners were Linkin Park and Iron Maiden, who were back in 2003 and 2004, respectively. In addition, the band My Chemical Romance was signed as headliner, which caused displeasure among many visitors.
This time the side stages were named "Tuborg Stage" and "Dimebag Darrell Stage". The Dimebag Darrell Stage was named after Dimebag Darrell , who was killed in a concert in 2004 and played at the Download Festival 2004 with his band Damageplan. Korn singer Jonathan Davis made Korn return again and was looking forward to finally being able to be on stage himself after he was unable to participate in 2006. My Chemical Romance, which was already perceived as inappropriate at the time of the announcement, were massively insulted during their performance, received boos and were thrown with bottles. Despite these riots they stayed on stage, but left the stage 20 minutes before their actual end of the set . The reason for quitting early is likely with the organizers, who asked them to quit early to avoid even more riots with the Korn and Suicidal-Tendencies fans who would soon have got off the backstage. The band caused so much displeasure with some of the visitors that they threw objects on the main stage screens when the My Chemical Romance video for "I Don't Love You" was played. The Download Festival 2007 was Dimmu Borgir's first festival appearance in England . In addition, this time there were problems with the failure of a tour bus, this time the Hardcore Superstar group had to postpone their performance date .

Download Festival 2008
In 2008 the festival took place from June 13th to 15th. This is a few days behind the usual days, which the organizers justified with the adaptation to the other European festivals. The headliners were Kiss , The Offspring , Lostprophets and Judas Priest . There were two pre-festivals this year. In addition, the organizers changed the festival site, which was now further west from the racetrack. Before the festival there were a few cancellations, including the top-class headliners Chris Cornell and Kid Rock , as well as Twin Method and Finger Eleven .

The 2009 festival took place from June 12th to 14th. During the three days, 120,000 people attended the festival. The location was changed again, this time the event was relocated to the south of the racetrack. With a total of four stages, the festival again expanded its line-up. Faith No More , Slipknot and Def Leppard headlined it . Slipknot's performance later appeared on their DVD (sic) nesses , which is dedicated to the memory of their late bassist Paul Gray .

Download Festival 2010
The 2010 Download Festival took place from June 11th to 13th, 2010. Headliners were AC / DC , Rage Against the Machine and Aerosmith . AC / DC brought their own stage and were able to bring their stadium show to Donington. It was the 30th anniversary of rock festivals for Donington Park Racetrack. In 1980 the first Monsters of Rock took place there. One of the bands performing at the time, the British heavy metal band Saxon also played their then current album Wheels of Steel in 2010 , also for the 30th anniversary in full. The “Main Stage” was therefore renamed. It was named "Maurice Jones Stage". Maurice Jones was the organizer of the Monsters of Rock and died in 2009. The "Second Stage" was also renamed after Ronnie James Dio died on May 16, 2010.
A fifth stage was added this year, sponsored by Jägermeister .
