Humber was a British automobile brand that dates back to the bicycle factory founded by Thomas Humber in 1868 and existed until 1975. The Rootes brothers took over the company in 1931 and incorporated it into the Rootes Group . The company mainly manufactured luxury models such as B. the Humber Super Snipe .

history

Humber's first model was a three-wheeled vehicle in 1898 . The company's first conventional four-wheel car appeared in 1901. There were factories in Beeston near Nottingham and Coventry . The Beeston factory produced more expensive models - known as "Beeston-Humbers", but in 1908 that facility had to close due to financial problems. Before the First World War , a large variety of models was produced, from the 600 cm³ Humberette to various 6 liter six-cylinder models. In 1913, Humber was the second largest automaker in Britain.

In 1925, Humber turned to the production of commercial vehicles when they bought the Commer company . Hillman joined in 1928 , but Humber had to give up his independence in 1931 when the Rootes brothers acquired a majority stake.

During the Second World War , various armored vehicles were built under the Humber name.

In the post-war period, the main products were the 4-cylinder "Hawk" car and its 6-cylinder counterpart, the "Super Snipe". The Humber were very popular with business people and enjoyed a reputation for elegant interiors and good quality.

In 1967, the American Chrysler group merged the British Rootes group, Simca in France and Barreiros (Spain) to form Chrysler Europe . Initially, the companies continued to build vehicles under the brands they had introduced.

The Hillman brand was abolished in 1975 and the vehicles were given the Chrysler emblem. The last Humber model was the Scepter , a luxury version of the Hillman Minx . The Hillman Hunter was sold as the Chrysler Hunter from 1977 until production ceased in 1979 when Chrysler Europe was sold to Peugeot and the brand was renamed Talbot . Talbot brand cars were built until 1986, after which the name was used for commercial vehicles for six years.
