The Chandler Motor Car Company was an American automobile manufacturer in the 1910s and 1920s.

Foundation and strategy of the company

The company was founded in 1913 by Frederick C. Chandler in Cleveland, Ohio . Chandler was previously a designer at Lozier Motor Company , a manufacturer of luxury automobiles. Chandler and several other executives left Lozier and joined the newly formed Chandler Motor Company.

Chandler focused on making a good quality mid- size automobile. Chandler automobiles were well received by the market.

production

In 1920, Chandler had a range of six automobiles, priced from 1995 to $ 3595. In 1922 there were ten models that cost between $ 1,495 and $ 2,375. Like many other mid-range automakers, Chandler introduced a cheaper vehicle for corporate fleets. To do this, he founded the Cleveland Automobile Company with the Cleveland brand.

Chandler's best year was 1927; he sold 20,000 cars. It was hoped to be able to increase sales further and therefore expanded too much in the following year. The company ended fiscal 1928 with over $ 500,000 in debt.

In 1929 the Chandler Motor Company was bought up by its competitor, the Hupp Motor Car Company , who also wanted to expand. Hupp was only interested in the factory and machine park and discontinued the brand.

The Chandlers, like most automobiles that emerged before the all-steel body was introduced as the industry standard, had bodies made of wooden frames clad with sheet metal. Because of the fabric roofs that became leaky over time, the wooden frames rotten away after a few decades, so not many of the automobiles from this time have survived.
