Stanley Motor Carriage Company was an American automobile manufacturer that produced steam cars . The seat was in Newton , Massachusetts . Production ran from 1897 to 1924.

The Stanley Rocket Steamer , driven by Fred Marriott , was the first automobile to go over 200 km / h.

Company formation

In 1897 the twin brothers Francis Edgar Stanley and Freelan O. Stanley built their first steam-powered automobile. The steam was generated in a vertically arranged boiler , which was attached behind the seats and heated by petroleum . The designers attached great importance to the safety of the steam generation. It was driven by two cylinders and a chain drive on the rear axle. In 1902, the two brothers founded the Stanley Motor Carriage Company to start manufacturing vehicles.

Rise and fall

The steam-powered Stanley steamers have been continuously developed. The boiler for generating steam was later moved to the front. To increase the range, condensers have been used for vapor recovery. In 1906 in Daytona Beach with the model "Stanley Rocket" by Fred Marriott, a world speed record for automobiles with steam drive was set with an impressive 195.6 km / h, which lasted for 103 years. The record for the fastest mile in this category also belongs to a Stanley Steamer with 28.2 seconds.

The competition from the internal combustion engine grew, however. In 1917 the two brothers sold their shares in Prescott Warren. Around 500 Stanley steamers had been built by then. There was no major technical development under the new owner. In 1924 the Steam Vehicle Corporation of America took over the company and continued production under its own brand name SV .

American television presenter Jay Leno is a passionate collector of vintage cars and also owns a Stanley steamer. According to his statements, the car is one of the favorite specimens, even if it is said to be losing water.
